To achieve your target, you need to know these things.
1. Understand what TOEIC is and why you need to take the TOEIC test.
You need to thoroughly understand what the TOEIC certificate is, its structure, and its scope of knowledge to prepare effectively. Additionally, determine your reasons for studying for and taking this exam. For example, before studying, I researched the graduation requirements of my university and the application requirements of major companies – all of which required TOEIC or IELTS. This motivated me to study harder.
2. Clearly define the goals and targets to be achieved.
The TOEIC test has both 2-skill and 4-skill versions, so remember to research carefully. For example, I initially only studied 2 skills, but after an internship, I had to rush back to work on my KPIs and study speaking and writing because everyone around me was so good at it. And in work, you communicate and discuss a lot in English, not to mention drafting emails and reports, so you can't underestimate the importance of speaking and writing. I sincerely recommend that you study all 4 skills; they complement each other much better. To quickly achieve your goals, you should set a target score from the beginning. For example, if your maximum score for listening and reading is 990, set your target at 930/990; if your maximum score for speaking and writing is 400, set your target at 340/400. Having a clear goal like that will give you the motivation to study, right?
3. Knowing which textbooks to use and how to use them effectively.
This is very important, because there will be suitable curricula for beginners and curricula suitable for advanced learners. Choose carefully so you don't feel overwhelmed while studying.
4. Do and grade the assignments carefully.
Studying is followed by practice, right? Practice here means working through practice tests, diligently doing them to get used to the format, speed, and difficulty of the questions. I mainly did tests from the ETS series and focused on the answer corrections. Correcting the answers helps you identify mistakes and adjust your study methods for better results. During my exam preparation period, I was doing an internship and studying at school, so time was very limited. Therefore, I decided to study online using a platform to be more flexible with my personal schedule. This website teaches according to a structured learning path, and what I found most convenient was that the practice tests always received detailed feedback. Every incorrect answer was clearly explained, so I often noted them down to avoid making the same mistakes later. Not to mention, the website also provides a very thoughtful vocabulary list after each lesson, so I followed it to improve my vocabulary, which really helped improve my listening and reading scores.
5. Don't cram.
You should create a study plan or schedule that fits your own schedule. For example, Day 1: study vocabulary and grammar, Day 2: review and practice listening, etc. Keep the study sessions manageable and spaced out so you have time to review; don't try to cram because that will only be counterproductive.
6. Don't put too much pressure on yourself when taking the exam.
Remember your purpose for taking the TOEIC exam, take deep breaths, and stay relaxed. I once felt so stressed that I couldn't understand what I was hearing or remember. That's why my Listening score wasn't as good as I hoped. The second time, I was calmer and put all my effort into the test, and the result was much better. So, keep a positive attitude, and even say a motivational mantra like "Everything you need is within you" – that's perfect! ^^
